- Kayrros, the world leader in environmental intelligence, has launched a methane-focused retrieval-augmented generation large language model (LLM), KayrrosAI, to coincide with COP29.
- KayrrosAI enables users to query its open-source Methane Watch map – part of its award-winning Methane Watch product – with text-based prompts.
- The map gives users methane emission insights at the regional and facility level, as well as an understanding of natural gas trades worldwide and the corresponding methane emissions.
- Users can request information on methane emissions anywhere in the US, thanks to the integration of public data from two satellites.
- Kayrros President Antoine Rostand said Kayrros was honouring its longstanding commitment to increasing climate literacy and empowering the general public to play a more active role in the climate crisis.
13 November 2024 – Kayrros, the world leader in environmental intelligence, has released a powerful, first-of-its-kind emissions-focused large language model (LLM) to coincide with COP29. KayrrosAI enables users to navigate its open-source Methane Watch map – part of its award-winning Methane Watch product – through text-based prompts.
The release reflects Kayrros longstanding commitment to increasing climate literacy and encouraging private individuals to take responsibility for climate action. At COP28, Kayrros released the first version of its open-access extension of Methane Watch to accelerate abatement of the greenhouse gas and give ordinary people a means to hold governments and companies to account for their emissions.
Thanks to KayrrosAI, users can now ask in their own words for specific information on methane emissions anywhere in the US, and soon anywhere in the world, through a clean, user-friendly interface and get the information, which is public, instantly delivered to their fingertips. Countries can also make use of the transparency provided by the Methane Watch platform to better understand their carbon footprint and plot an optimal methane abatement path.
The LLM – technically a RAG (retrieval-augmented generation) LLM – is freely available online and regularly updated. RAG is a machine-learning model that can comprehend and generate human language text, but one that uses an AI framework that grounds the model in external sources of knowledge – namely, in the public methane data that Kayrros draws from satellites and analyses in-house.
KayrrosAI can be found online here: https://methanewatch.kayrros.com/.
This year, Kayrros Methane Watch revealed that signatories of the Global Methane Pledge, including one of its architects and loudest advocates, were continuing to spew methane into the atmosphere. EU policymakers consulted with Kayrros, as world experts in environmental and methane intelligence, before drawing up their landmark methane regulation, which came into force earlier this year.
In 2023, Methane Watch shed light on some of the biggest methane leaks in the world – leaks so large they rivalled the emissions of whole countries. Kayrros data revealed giant leaks in Turkmenistan, prompting talks of repair with the US and the addition of Turkmenistan to the list of signatories of the Global Methane Pledge at COP28. The same year, Kayrros showed that Kazakh emissions – widely dismissed as ‘hot vapour’ – were the product of one of the biggest methane leaks in recorded history.
By combining KayrrosAI with the latest version of its open-access Methane Watch map, Kayrros aims to make climate data more accessible, giving governments, international institutions, investors, insurers and individuals the power to scrutinise public emissions data, verify that data, and expose ‘greenwashing’. Kayrros’ proprietary data will be available for Kayrros customers.
Through written requests, users can gain insights at every level, from broad regional overviews down to specific facilities. Users will also be able to access extensive inventories across different asset categories.
Antoine Rostand, President and co-founder of Kayrros, said that Kayrros cared deeply about climate literacy, and believed individuals should be empowered to hold emitters to account..
‘Public pressure can force governments and large organisations to do what is needed to prevent climate breakdown.
‘That starts with information. This RAG LLM allows ordinary people to query the open-access Methane Watch map, find out who is emitting what and where, and play a real role in the climate crisis.
‘We remain committed not just to advising decision-makers and giving them the actionable information they need to pass effective climate policy, but to increasing climate literacy across the board. Methane emissions can be addressed relatively easily. With enough public pressure, that will happen.’
Kayrros has pointed out that rapid cuts in methane emissions from fossil fuels could lead to a reduction of 0.3°C in global temperature rise by mid-century – equivalent to the emissions impact of immediately taking all cars and trucks in the world off the road.
The company’s methodology and data quality have been endorsed in numerous peer-reviewed studies and are seen as the international benchmark for global methane emission monitoring.
Data from Kayrros’ Methane Watch is now used by a number of global bodies, including the United Nations Environment Program’s International Methane Emissions Observatory. Kayrros’ work has also been widely recognised across the media, for its essential role in confronting the climate crisis.
Kayrros flagship product, Methane Watch, will continue to provide exclusive data and insights to the company’s clients
