Though accounts vary over the exact origin of the flames, it has been spewing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere for decades. And how do these emissions compare with those of unburnt methane escaping from the country\u2019s oil and gas production, for which Turkmenistan has also been making <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-09-16\/methane-plumes-spotted-near-turkmenistan-pipes-to-china-russia\">headlines?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_8021\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8021\" style=\"width: 530px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8021 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kayrros.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Picture3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kayrros.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Picture3.png 540w, https:\/\/www.kayrros.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Picture3-300x170.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8021\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Kayrros analysis, contains modified Copernicus Sentinel Data [2021]<\/figcaption><\/figure>We leveraged our<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kayrros.com\/products-carbon-watch-for-ets-traders\/\"> <strong>Carbon Watch<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kayrros.com\/products-methane-watch-for-operators\/\"><strong>Methane Watch<\/strong><\/a> technologies \u2013 built on satellite imagery and proprietary algorithms\u2014to measure the pit\u2019s emission rates, and benchmark them against the methane \u201cultra-emitters\u201d from the country\u2019s eastern and western regions.<\/p>\n<p>Kayrros data show that in 2018, the crater released 50,500 tons of CO2 from flaring and combustion within the pit, a number equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions rate of approximately 11,000 passenger cars (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/greenvehicles\/greenhouse-gas-emissions-typical-passenger-vehicle\">assuming that each car drives about 11,500 miles per year<\/a><\/strong>). Darvaza\u2019s CO2 emission rates have been steadily declining since then, dropping to 37,600 tons of CO2 in 2021, most likely due to depleting levels or changing flows of the burning natural gas.<\/p>\n<p>That may sound like a lot, but Kayrros Methane Watch shows methane emissions from the country\u2019s onshore oil and gas operations totaled about ~5 million tons in 2021, equivalent to 423 Mln T CO2e (based on the global warming power of methane over the first twenty years after its release into the atmosphere, or GWP20) \u2013 or the annual emissions of 91,956,521.7 passenger cars.
